Terhi Tuomi is the new Head of Exhibitions at Aboa Vetus Ars Nova
Aboa Vetus Ars Nova has appointed Terhi Tuomi, a distinguished professional in the fields of culture and contemporary art, as the new Head of Exhibitions.
“It is a rare privilege to contribute to the development of this unique institution, a palace of art and history where different layers of time remain visibly and tangibly present. Exhibitions offer an exceptional means of creating meaningful connections between the past and the present, fostering a multifaceted dialogue between art and society.
At a time marked by global uncertainty, the value of nurturing art, culture, and history is greater than ever. Understanding our origins and recognising our roots enables us to reach confidently towards the future through art and to adopt new perspectives.”
In her new role, Tuomi seeks to strengthen the museum’s position as a community-oriented and discussion-promoting cultural institution where contemporary phenomena, artistic expression, and historical narratives converge. She intends to draw on international currents in the art world, introduce new curatorial approaches, and provide a platform for the diversity of the local art scene.
“The archaeological part of the museum, Aboa Vetus, has recently undergone renovation. This creates an excellent opportunity to re-evaluate and revitalise the exhibitions at Ars Nova, the museum’s modern and contemporary art wing. Ars Nova has a long-standing tradition of presenting pioneering contemporary artists: when the museum opened in 1995, it featured a solo exhibition by Nam June Paik, the groundbreaking South Korean video art pioneer, which was truly visionary at the time. It is deeply inspiring to develop a renewed exhibition strategy and to reintroduce international contemporary art into the museum’s programme.”
Museum Director Hannele Lehtonen remarks: “We are delighted to welcome a highly experienced art professional whose vision will support the museum’s long-term development and further strengthen the dialogue between art and archaeology.”
Tuomi holds a Master of Arts degree in Art History and has professional training in spatial design. Her career includes extensive experience in curatorial practice, project management, and exhibition design within both Finnish and international art institutions.
Tuomi started in her new position on November 10, 2025.
