In autumn 2026, Ars Nova will host an exhibition featuring works of Finnish visual artist and designer Liisi Beckmann (1924–2004).
Beckmann was born in Kirvu, Karelia, but spent much of her life abroad. She had a successful career as a designer in Italy during the 1950s–1970s and is known, among other things, for the Karelia chair, which is highly sought after by collectors. Later in life, Beckmann shifted mainly to visual arts. In her artistic production, Beckmann used various recycled materials, fabrics and paper-based techniques. Her art has been exhibited especially in Northern Italy and Germany. In Finland, however, Beckmann’s work is relatively little known. The exhibition at Ars Nova is unique as it is Beckmann’s first solo exhibition in Finland.
