Beer, spirits and tobacco

17th-century royal proclamations, or statutes, regulated beer and other stimulants. Spirits and tobacco were, moreover, new developments of that century. To monitor their production and sale closely, Crown officials were needed to oversee enforcement. Tobacco inspectors and spirits inspectors stepped in.

But how did the people of Turku react to the new regulations? And what was the townspeople’s attitude, in practice, towards these regulated drinks and tobacco? And how were those who broke the rules punished?

Come and listen to an interesting lecture by Dr Veli Pekka Toropainen at the Factory conference room in Aboa Vetus Ars Nova! The lecture will be in Finnish.

Admission to the event is free. Welcome!
