\nTiina Elina Nurminen: In Paradise Together<\/em>

Tiina Elina Nurminen<\/strong> (b. 1960) discovered the joy of making art early on \u2013 at the age of nine. She says, \u201cYou can\u2019t always get your thoughts across properly by talking,\u201d<\/em> and continues, \u201cI make art about events in my life that are important to me.<\/em> I have been working for a long time on this collection called In Paradise Together.<\/em> It has all sorts of things from the moment I was born until today.<\/em> Drawing and colouring and painting and writing are important to me \u2013 making angels and lace doilies and teddy bears and people and cats and paradise.<\/em> Crafting.<\/em> Making and writing Christmas things and cards.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

For Tiina Elina creating images is a form of communication and self-expression. She is a thinker who wants to bring to light significant events in her life and the ideas that emerge from them. But the works also have another deeper purpose, which is to safeguard and prepare for the future \u2013 life after death. The works are a checklist of everything you take along to paradise.<\/p>\n

In Paradise<\/em> Together<\/em> consists of drawings made on large sheets of thin Japanese paper with different colourful inks and acrylics. All works were made from 2012 onwards. The drawings are highly detailed and colourful \u2013 made with the utmost care. Most of Tiina Elina\u2019s works combine text and image in an original cartoon-like way: textual descriptions of the events run among the images, and characters have their names attached to them.<\/p>\n

Tiina Elina has depicted all the friends and important events of her life in her works. They all have a place in her shared paradise. The drawings are autobiographical and made with great love. The choice of colours, such as those used for human figures, often convey associations or emotions. Angels are a recurring motif in the works, especially Gabriel, in whose image Tiina Elina has captured all her friends. The moods associated with the angels vary: the figure of a happy angel can be followed by one with a frightful expression.<\/p>\n

Some of the works depict common occurrences in Tiina Elina\u2019s life, and there too her gratitude for the everyday assistance she receives shines through. The motifs include a school taxi, a dollhouse at Paimio Central Institute, Finnish Adult Education Center of Turku, and the Toivola Service Center.<\/p>\n

A more emotional aspect of Tiina Elina\u2019s output consists of portraits of such people as psychologist Mirja Karttunen, her boyfriend, and art instructor Eija Ruoho, who is also her best friend. Tiina Elina includes candid written descriptions related to the themes of her works. In counterpoint to the love and joy suffusing the pictures, the texts describe the challenges in Tiina Elina\u2019s life caused by her special needs. Tiina Elina\u2019s stories are a good example of the cruel way that exclusion and difference accumulate throughout life. In her case, art has served as a path towards paradise.<\/p>\n

Tiina Elina works for long periods at a time, totally immersed in drawing from morning till night. The largest works have taken dozens of hours of make. One of Tiina Elina\u2019s favourite places to work is the home of art instructor Eija Ruoho, where many of the works on display were made. Artist Eija Ruoho has been Tiina Elina\u2019s mentor since 1996.<\/p>\n

In 2009, outsider-art curator Colin Rhodes selected Tiina Elina\u2019s drawings for the<\/em> Revealing<\/em> the Human<\/em> exhibition in Melbourne, Australia, in which 20 artists from different countries participated. The works in the exhibition were added to the collections of outsider art in Australia.<\/p>\n

Tiina Elina Nurminen has participated in several group exhibitions in Finland, including Art Centre Into\u2019s 10th anniversary exhibition at Brinkkala Gallery (Turku 2019), Viidakossa<\/em> tarkkaillaan<\/em> exhibition at Gallery Kaarisilta (Helsinki 2018) and Outoja lintuja, kummia kaloja<\/em>, presenting art by special groups at Gallery ARX (H\u00e4meenlinna 2008). Her work was also shown in Melbourne, Australia, in 2009 (Revealing<\/em> the<\/em> Human<\/em>, Arts Project Australia). She has contributed to several public artworks. In 2014, Tiina Elina was elected Artist of the Year by Kettuki.<\/p>\n

Gallery Into<\/strong><\/p>\n

The mission of Galleria Into is to showcase outsider art!<\/p>\n

The gallery is a collaboration project between the Taidekeskus Into association and Aboa Vetus Ars Nova Museum. The project will run from April 2023 until January 2024. It will include five solo exhibitions in the museum\u2019s second-floor gallery, by artists working at the Into art centre. The exhibition concept has been named Galleria Into, which translates into \u201cGallery Enthusiasm\u201d.<\/p>\n

Taidekeskus Into<\/strong><\/p>\n

Taidekeskus Into provides art activities and visual arts education for people with special needs. Founded in 2009, the centre is located in Pompo, Turku. Taidekeskus Into offers regular art classes and courses and hosts several artist studios and public community art projects.<\/p>\n

Taidekeskus Into lives up to its name: it is a vibrant community that operates freely and professionally. The activities are guided by a view of art that allows everyone to be seen and heard in their own way.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt means a lot. Really a lot. How should I describe it\u2026 Really very much. It\u2019s everything.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Aboa Vetus Ars Nova<\/strong><\/p>\n

Cooperation with the museum was initiated by Taidekeskus Into. Art tutors and long-time Into activists Eija Ruoho and Sinikka M\u00e4ki-Lertola invited museum curator Niina Tanskanen to visit the centre, which quickly led to the idea of exhibition cooperation.<\/p>\n

The two parties share a desire to do something different. For the museum, it is a great honour to provide the venue for the exhibitions that Into has been working on for years. Cooperation with Into also aims to make outsider art part of the wider art field. But the best thing about the collaboration is the exhibitions themselves: these five artists\u2019 works are truly worth experiencing!<\/p>\n
